How I Got My First Ten Thousand Followers on TikTok in One Week

As an adman who’s always challenged myself to walk the talk, I have tried my best to understand Tiktok. In an attempt to have a good case on the platform, my personal account has undergone different types of rebranding, from a musician who dishes out original songs to doing gag shows and more, but it always gets stuck with less than 50 followers.

Last week, i think I was able to somehow crack the code, at least in getting that dream 10k followers. (Having 10k followers give you content creator perks).

Side story. My mom has been bugging me to create a Tiktok account with the hopes of me going viral, and earning big bucks. I finally gave in, but as a joke, I looked for a supplier who could help me bring to life a vision- my mom as a puppet on social media. I gave some sketches and pegs for the character design and supervised the production, in every step of the way.

In one week, the character Inang Papet on Tiktok has already got 10k followers. Here are some of my observations on how I was able to pull it off:

1. IT’S A VISUAL GENERATION. Capitalize on what you can show best. Visually, there are only two things that Tiktok viewers gravitate to: people who look interesting (good looking, or basic but hilarious) or simply cute.

I went for the second route, by creating a cute character.

2. WRITE DOWN SCENARIOS. The best way to test any idea is if you can think of endless executions under it. Writing scenarios and listing down a content plan with my Filipino Mom character was easy. In one sitting, I was able to plot down a month’s worth of topics and skits, which serve as a list whenever I have time to shoot and add something to my library. For one week, I was able to post a maximum of 3 shorts per day. This helped me give a good impression to visitors, and even the algorithm. Your first few posts are crucial, as these will help them figure out who you are and what your content stands for. Once you have proven that you’re not a bot, and you are interesting enough to be included in the FYP, you’ll start getting your audience.

2. RELATABILITY.

Being featured in strangers’ walls is only the beginning. Your content should be able to get them hooked. The goal of each post is engagement– is it relatable enough for them to like, comment, repost? A good test for this is when somebody “hearts” your post, they end up clicking the follow button.

3. FIGURE OUT YOUR UNIVERSE. Listen to your audience. Create that universe with them. On the second day of InangPapet’s existence, I have been getting comments from people fondly calling my character “mom”. Some even reply with scenarios that eventually become inspo’s to my next posts. It’s social listening.

4. MORE TRICKS I’VE OBSERVED:

a) SHOCK. (via audio, visuals) - Your first 3 seconds are crucial. Grab ‘em.

b) HOOK. What will make them continue watching?

c) Title card/supers are your friends

d) Trendjack, but don’t lose your identity.

5. OBSERVE what clicks, repeat the formula.

6. KEEP POSTING until you earn your place.

Tiktok is like a referral game. Never underestimate one like. It could lead you to your next one. Happy content creating!
